Wow - what an introduction! Yet after speaking with Mike Martin , managing artistic director of The Georgia Mountain Players, we believe every word of it!

The Georgia Mountain Players are a repertory theatre company about to enter their sixteenth year of business. They produce 4-5 shows a year, mostly comedies and musical comedies. True to their mission statement, these shows provide great family entertainment for all ages - you can take your children or your grandparents without any fear of embarrassment or awkward moments!
In 1984, a friend of Mike's suggested he audition for a part in 'My Fair Lady'. By the time the next show came up, Mike had managed to get his wife interested...and the rest, my friends, is history! They were actively involved with the Gainesville Theatre Alliance for many years, before helping to start the Georgia Mountain Players 16 years ago. Mike initially started building sets, helping with costumes, etc part-time since he still had his own business at the time. He went full-time about 8-10 years ago. What differentiates this theatre company from others in the entertainment industry? Well, other than the fact that they produce such good, wholesome family entertainment that many church groups have season tickets, is the fact that they are pretty much a repertory company. This means that if they can cast within the 17-18 players that they have, they do. If they have a part they cannot fill, then they go outside and sometimes hold open auditions. However, the part is usually filled through people the players already know.
Shows are February, April, August and October. In 2007, they had a bonus show in June, and typically do produce a bonus show every other year. The players start rehearsing about 6 weeks before a show's opening. They initially rehearse 3 nights a week, and increase this to 4-6 times a week, including weekends, as they get closer to the performance.
This August will be the Georgia Mountain Players' sixteenth performance of 'Smoke on the Mountain'. Last year tickets sold out in less than 5 days. This theatre company is not just known locally either. Their audience is made up of people from all over - South Georgia, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina etc. In fact, about 56% of the season ticket holders are from outside Gainesville.
The Georgia Mountain Players perform at the Georgia Mountain Center. For season tickets or any other information, call (770)536-4677 . The Georgia Mountain Center handles requests for individual tickets, which are usually available about a month before each show.
